About this position

To qualify for this position, all applicants must meet the following: Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved Schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must confirm that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary for Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. Licensure/Registration. Physicians must possess current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification, OR Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), leading to eligibility for board certification, OR (One year of post medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States; OR Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Additional Requirement: Board Certification Required Physicians are generally not required to be board certified for employment in VA; however, three circumstances in VA require Physician board certification: If the position being filled is required to be a supervisor for medical students or Physician residents (including fellows), the LCME, ACGME, or AOA standards requiring a particular board certification credential will apply. If the position being filled will have faculty status with an affiliated medical school (for example, in joint recruitments with affiliated medical schools), then a medical school requirement for board certification will apply to the jointly recruited position. If the position being filled is required to be board certified by virtue of specific VHA policy (for example, as director of a cardiac catheterization laboratory or Director of Clinical Laboratory Medicine), then VHA policy requiring board certification will apply. NOTE: Board certification must be maintained for the duration of time that the employee is serving in a position that meets the circumstances listed above. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the position involve standard office requirements such as using the telephone, retrieving files, writing reports, data entry and maintenance of computer databases, etc. Work is typically performed sitting at a desk and using a computer. This position may require occasional travel. The position requires periods of walking, standing, sitting and bending. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. These include clinical and administrative management, either directly or through delegated authority of the following: Conducts interpretations on Diagnostic Imaging, MRI, CT, US, IR, or NM (any or all) Defines Modality Specific Protocolling Consults with Ordering Providers Reviews Orders and defines imaging protocols Assists in Fee Basis Consult Review Attends Multi-Disciplinary Conferences Performs Non-IR Invasive Procedures Resident supervision/education Works with and is supported by Radiology Service leadership. Provides direct clinical and administrative oversight for mid-level practitioners and other clinical staff as assigned. Responsible for providing services in an efficient, high-quality, cost effective manner within budget allocation. Works directly with Section Chief, Diagnostic Radiology Section to assist in ensuring adequate and appropriate staffing and scheduling of complex procedures. Participates in training and support of technical staff. Works with the Section Chief, Diagnostic Radiology Section and other staff as appropriate, supports operations issues/problems resolution in a logical, step-wise fashion. Participates in a forum in which staff identifies, communicate, and resolve issues related to Radiology Service, Medical Center ancillary and support operations, and VISN-wide mandates. Works with the Chief, Radiology Service and other disciplines as necessary to support, contribute to and implement policies, procedures, performance goals, strategic plans and initiatives. Seeks and enhances opportunities to promote and strengthen the Medical Center's and VISN goals. Responsible for implementing the goal of improving care for patients within the Medical Center and VISN. Has basic understanding of managed care practices, including health care finance, billing, coding and documentation. Knowledge, ability and willingness to use and promote the dissemination among clinical staff of current automated technology for Health Information Management Sections (HIMS), patient data tracking, patient orders, etc. Contributes to the development, maintenance and enhancement of relations with internal and external entities including but not limited to: medical and nursing schools, local public and private health care entities, colleagues in other Patient Services and Integrated Services such as Information Technology, Laboratory, and Business Office, labor, and VISN. Participates in Radiology Service strategic planning. Participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings or committees. Provides direct patient care as a consultant in outpatient clinics and/or inpatient wards and will participate as a representative for Radiology Service at multi-disciplinary conferences, such as Tumor Board or Chest Conference. Performance reflects and demonstrates support of the Chief, Radiology Service, Chief of Staff, Medical Center Director's, VISN Network and national goals. Participates in regular peer review activities. Reporting Relationship: The staff Radiologist reports to the Section Chief, Diagnostic Radiology, Chief, Radiology Service, Chief of Staff, and Medical Center Director. Functions locally as a team member of the Radiology Service with a regular interface with the Section Chief, Diagnostic Radiology and Chief, Radiology Service.
