About this position

Applicants will be considered based on their knowledge, skills or abilities related to project needs. Specifically, applicants should: Be pursuing a Bachelor's or higher degree in Data Sciences, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Graphic Design or other directly relevant field. Have experience or familiarity with visual information software or technology (coursework accepted). This includes but is not limited to: ArcGIS StoryMaps, Adobe Creative Suite software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro), R, or Python. Have the ability to work independently and as part of a large, collaborative team. Make an impact while you learn. The Semester of Service Program offers students a volunteer project-based opportunity to support real Federal missions, gaining hands-on experience and valuable career-ready skills. The government-wide "Semester of Service" Student Volunteer Program enables Federal agencies to engage students in unpaid, project-based assignments of limited duration aligning with each agency's strategic priorities.
  • Work Schedule and Flexibilities: Flexible on work schedule depending on student availability. Students can work remotely or in person if located in Fort Collins, CO office. Number of Positions: 1 Term(s): Fall 2026 (90 day term between August 15 - December 15) This vacancy will be open until Wednesday, July 15th at 11:59pm ET or until 60 applications have been received. The Fort Collins Science Center (FORT) is home to over 60 scientists who develop and disseminate research-based information and tools needed to understand the nation's biological resources in support of the U.S. Department of the Interior's resource management bureaus as well as other Federal and State agencies, Native American Tribes, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations. FORT is looking for a Science Synthesis and Data Visualization student volunteer to assist the Center with the development of science synthesis products for stakeholders interested in learning about or using center science. Throughout the semester, the student would ideally work on a single, visually compelling science synthesis product, for example using ArcGIS StoryMaps, to help deliver complex research to our partners. The exact nature of that product will be decided based on the students' needs and goals, but all products will center on high-priority, mission-aligned science within the Department of Interior.
